In his book The Science of Persuasion, Robert Cialdini identifies 6 key principles of persuasion which can be used to influence others.

Reciprocity
People will help if they feel obligated to return a favour, so if you can perform a good deed for someone there is a greater chance that they will reciprocate. That’s the rule of reciprocity
Commitment and Consistency
When we commit to an idea or goal, we are more likely to honour that commitment. People want their beliefs to be consistent with their values
Social proof
There is safety in numbers. Social proof can be defined as people doing what they see other people doing. For example, if we see our our coworkers arrive late to meetings, we’re more likely to feel comfortable doing the same

Authority
People tend to follow and look up to authority figures, even if they are asked to perform objectionable acts. In uncertain times they may look outside themselves for information to guide their own decision making. Job titles and uniforms (think doctors, emergency service workers, scientists) infuse an air of authority, making the average person more likely to accept what that person says
Liking
People are more easily influenced by other people that they like. According to Cialdini, people are also more likely to favour those who are physically attractive, similar to themselves, or who give them compliments. Even something as ‘random’ as having the same name can increase your chances of making a sale. People find it very difficult to say no to people they like
Scarcity
Purely supply and demand. The less there is of something, the more valuable it is. The more rare and uncommon a thing, the more people want it. If your product or service is unique, be sure to emphasise its unique qualities to increase the perception of its scarcity
